THE BEST AUSTRIAN PANCAKES YOU NEED TO TRY OUT

Austrian pancakes. If you are wondering what is the Austrian dessert-like pancakes called, here is your answer: Kaiserschmarrn or Kaiserschmarren. The delightful and iconic, fluffy, shredded Austrian pancakes typically served with powdered sugar, fruits, or fruit compote are amazingly delicious for breakfast. I won’t recommend them as a dessert though, because they are so rich that they are a meal on their own. However, these pancakes are something you need to try if you happen to be in Austria.

WHERE TO EAT KAISERSCHMARRN?

While Kaiserschmarrn or Austrian pancakes can be found in many Austrian regions and restaurants, trying it in Salzkammergut can be a particularly special experience for several reasons.

THE LEGEND OF THE AUSTRIAN PANCAKES

A story tells that his famous Austrian dessert originated from a mishap during one of Emperor Franz Joseph I’s hunting trips in the Salzkammergut region. The Emperor had lost his way during a hunting trip and was caught in the rain and landed in the house of a simple farming family. The farmer’s wife had very little food at home, only eggs, milk, flour, and some fruits.

From these ingredients, she supposedly wanted to prepare a typical Austrian pancake. It was known, that the Emperor loved pancakes for dessert. However, she failed to make them perfectly. The pancake turned out too thick and fluffy and tore apart. In her desperation, she served the dish with lots of powdered sugar and raisins. Surprisingly, the emperor was delighted by the dish and praised it. She responded, “Oh, it’s just a mess.” To which Franz Josef amusingly replied, “Yes, but a proper Kaiserschmarrn (Emperor’s mess).”

This delightful accident gave birth to the beloved dish known as “Kaiserschmarrn,” a royal mess turned into a delicious tradition.
