Legend has it that an unknown hermit secretly smuggled one of the 70 icons said to have been painted by Luke the Apostle from Asia Minor to Cyprus. This icon of the Virgin Mary remained hidden until 1145, when two hermits from Palestine, Neophytos and Ignatius, discovered it in a cave.
To reach the icon, they had to cut through the forest using machetes. Because of this, the icon was named ‘Machairotissa,’ derived from the Greek word for knife, μαχαίρι (Makhaira). The entire monastery, founded on this site, takes its name from this iconic discovery. Visit the Machairas Monastery to explore its rich history and the legend that continues to inspire visitors.
We were told this story by a monk, who in a nice Christian manner reminded us to keep respectful and silent in the presence of the icon.
