Are you planning on visiting Greece this year? If you are, but don’t feel like the overcrowded islands, let me tell you Northern Greece might be a great option for you! It definitely was for us! We drove from coast to coast – from the Aegean to the Ionian Sea and saw so much beauty along the way! So, if you decide to drive stop along the way and take in the beautiful sights!

From ancient ruins to stunning beaches, and picturesque villages to breathtaking mountains and incredible food, Northern Greece seems to have it all. Whether you’re into history, nature, or just want to relax on the beach, this area offers something for everyone.
So, here are some of our favorite must-see destinations – like Kavala, Halkidiki, Thessaloniki, Meteora, and Parga. I’ll also include some of our favorite restaurants in the area.

Kavala: Where History Meets the Aegean
Kavala is a beautiful coastal city and it’s a fantastic starting point for our journey! With its lovely harbor, ancient ruins, and stunning landscapes, it’s a must-visit destination. Wander through the old town (Panagia), explore the Kavala Fortress (don’t miss the stunning views over the city from the top) and feast on fresh food at a local taverna.
Best things to see and do in Kavala:
- Visit the Kavala Fortress: It’s one of the best-preserved fortresses in Greece, offering panoramic views of the city and the sea.
- Explore the Old Town (Panagia): Wander through narrow alleys and discover traditional houses and the historic Khan of Kavala.
- Enjoy a relaxing walk along the harbor: The city’s waterfront is filled with cafes and restaurants serving fresh seafood.
Favorite Place to Eat in Kavala To Araliki and you can read more about our trip to Kavala here.

Halkidiki: Three Peninsulas of Paradise
On the map, Halkidiki looks like three (admittedly creepy) fingers sticking out into the Aegean. That’s three fingers of paradise! Think turquoise water, white sand, and pine trees that come right down to the shore. It’s the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a beach vacation.

The three peninsulas (the creepy fingers) are Kassandra, Sithonia, and Mount Athos and each offer unique experiences. For example, Mount Athos is a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most significant monastic communities. However, since access is limited to male visitors only (requiring a special permit) this peninsula will remain a mystery to me.
The other two peninsulas – Kassandra and Sithonia are both accessible and perfect for anyone looking to spend some time on the beach and enjoy nature!
Favorite Place to Eat: Ta Kastra

Thessaloniki: The Buzzing Heart of the North
Thessaloniki is Greece’s second-largest city and it offers the perfect mix of ancient history and modern living. The city has everything from Byzantine ruins to lively markets, trendy cafes, and art galleries.
Walk along the waterfront promenade, visit the White Tower, explore the Archaeological Museum, see Aristotelous Square (the heart of the city) and wander around Modiano Market.

Meteora: Nature & Monasteries
Meteora is one of Greece’s most awe-inspiring sights, it is truly like something out of a fantasy movie.
With its incredible rock formations and monasteries atop them, Meteora is a UNESCO World Heritage site that should be on every traveler’s bucket list. When I think of Greece, I think of this region.

Hiking through Meteora offers stunning views and visiting the monasteries is an experience in its own right. You can drive or hike up to the monasteries (some people even biked in the heat), take a guided tour, or you can also admire the views from below, it is stunning wherever you go!
And the food in the region!!! It’s probably the best food we’ve had in Greece, and Greece has the best food overall in my opinion.

Definitely a must-try: Moussaka and Soutzoukakia (Greek meatballs in tomato sauce).
Favorite Place To Eat: Eagle Nest Restaurant (amazing food and incredible mountain view)

Parga: A Colorful Seaside town on the Ionian Coast
And just like that, we made it to the Ionian Sea, which with its crystal clear waters and scenery just makes you want to buy a small house and never, ever, leave.

One of the places to never leave there is Parga. It’s a beautiful seaside town with colorful houses, a beachfront, and a Venetian castle. Parga is the perfect place to wander around, explore the shops and tavernas, and soak up the atmosphere. It is the perfect destination for families and couples!
The town is pretty packed and more touristy than the places we visited around Meteora, but it is still worth it.

Other Must-See Places in Northern Greece
While you’re exploring Northern Greece, don’t be so focused on your destination, try and to stop along the way and take in the views of the beautiful nature around. Greece has so much to offer.
You might see some goats too.

We saw a lot, but there’s still so much more to see in Northern Greece. Especially if you love spending time in nature, here are some of the things on our must-experience list:
- Mount Olympus: Greece’s highest peak and the legendary home of the gods. Hike through the beautiful national park and explore ancient ruins along the way.
- Vergina: Visit the archaeological site where the tomb of Philip II, father of Alexander the Great, was discovered.
- Prespa Lakes: A tranquil spot near the borders with Albania and North Macedonia, perfect for nature lovers and birdwatchers.
- Lake Kerkini: A paradise for birdwatchers, this lake is home to a variety of wildlife, including pelicans and herons.
- Traditional Villages of Zagori: Stone bridges and traditional villages in a mountain landscape.
Conclusion: Go and visit!
Northern Greece has everything you could want in a vacation: stunning beaches, ancient history, delicious food, and friendly people. It is a region full of charm, history, and natural beauty.
